The mucilage crisis turned the Sea of Marmara from an environmental headline into a production and tourism issue. Everyone who lives and produces in the region saw it: the sea’s carrying capacity is not unlimited.
What the plan requires
- All existing wastewater treatment plants in the region to be converted to advanced biological treatment.
- Accelerated transition to advanced treatment technologies in organised industrial zones.
- Circular economy principles and water reuse at facilities discharging into the Marmara.
- Clean production technologies to reduce wastewater generation at source.
What it means for manufacturers
In the short term, investment. Read the other way round, however, water recovery means a permanent reduction in operating cost — and for exporters to the EU, water and waste performance is now a standing item on customer audit checklists.
